Mormon apostasy: a documented case

 • Updated 2025-08-15 04:43 • MT The "great and spacious" headquarters

Lehi saw "a great and spacious building ... high above the earth," crowded with well-dressed people who mocked the faithful. In this reading those well-dressed figures represent the Church's corporate class and money managers. The headquarters projects a global brand with world-map reliefs and national flags, signaling status and wealth. The Church's investment arm, Ensign Peak Advisors, admitted in a U.S. SEC case to using shell entities to mask holdings and paid penalties; public reporting placed the portfolio at over $100 billion. The symbol fits: pride, polish, and power standing apart from the humble followers of Christ.

Figure 1. Church Office Building with globe. Photograph showing the tower and the granite world-map globe at the plaza.

1) Plural marriage: claimed revelation → formal stop

Joseph Smith dictated a revelation on eternal and plural marriage on July 12, 1843 (Doctrine and Covenants 132). In 1890 the First Presidency issued Official Declaration 1 ("the Manifesto"), and Church manuals summarize it as ending the practice of plural marriage. A practice once presented as divinely required was halted to conform to civil pressure. That is a clean break from what was taught before.

2) Adam–God: prophetic teaching → public rejection

Brigham Young taught versions of what later came to be called the Adam–God doctrine. In October 1976 President Spencer W. Kimball said from the pulpit, "We denounce that [Adam–God] theory." A later prophet rejected what an earlier prophet had taught. That is a direct reversal at the top.

3) Race and priesthood: lineage ban → universal ordination

In 1852 Brigham Young told the territorial legislature that men with Black African ancestry could not hold the priesthood. Sample statement: "Any man having one drop of the seed of Cain in him cannot hold the priesthood" (short excerpt). The restriction lasted until 1978, when Official Declaration 2 removed all race-based limits. The Church's own essays now disavow the racial theories once used to justify the ban. A rule tied to lineage for more than a century was reversed and its reasons were set aside.

4) Temple ordinances: repeated core changes

Independent reporting and scholarship document major endowment changes in 1990 and further adjustments in 2019. These changes removed or rewrote promises, wording, and parts of the ceremony. Simple conclusion: if a ceremony that is supposed to stay the same keeps getting changed—words, promises, and steps—then the claim that the pattern never changes does not hold.

Scripture applied

Spacious building falls. 1 Nephi 11:35–36 says the great and spacious building "fell." If judgment begins "upon my house" (D&C 112:24–26), then a headquarters-fall fits the symbol. In a nuclear judgment scenario, a strike on Salt Lake City would match Nephi's image of a proud tower collapsing.

Apostasy identified. 2 Nephi 28 describes last-days apostasy ("all is well in Zion," false and vain doctrines). Mormon 8:38 condemns polluting "the holy church of God" for the praise of the world. D&C 1:14–16 says people "have strayed from mine ordinances" and walk after the image of the world.

Urgency to repent. Alma 34:33–35 warns procrastinators become "subject to the devil." D&C 45:2 calls all to hearken "today." Jeremiah 8:20 adds, "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved." Isaiah 1:27 promises, "Zion shall be redeemed with judgment."

Scripture addendum: false apostles, false prophets, and where judgment starts

False apostles and teachers

·  Revelation 2:2. "Thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars."

·  2 Corinthians 11:13–15. False apostles, deceitful workers; even Satan poses as an angel of light.

·  Galatians 1:8–9. If we or an angel preach another gospel, let him be accursed.

False prophets and end-time drift

·  Matthew 7:15–23. Beware of false prophets; by their fruits ye shall know them; "I never knew you."

·  Matthew 24:11, 24. Many false prophets shall arise and shall show great signs and wonders.

·  Deuteronomy 13:1–5. Even if a sign comes to pass, do not follow a prophet who leads to other gods.

·  Deuteronomy 18:20–22. If what a prophet speaks in the Lord's name does not happen, he spoke presumptuously.

·  Jeremiah 23:16–32. Prophets who speak a vision of their own heart.

·  Ezekiel 13:2–10. "Woe unto the foolish prophets ... that follow their own spirit."

·  2 Peter 2:1–3. False teachers will bring in damnable heresies.

·  2 Thessalonians 2:3. A falling away comes first.

·  2 Timothy 4:3–4. People will not endure sound doctrine and will turn to fables.

·  1 Timothy 4:1–3. In the latter times some depart from the faith; "forbidding to marry."

·  1 John 4:1. Try the spirits because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Doctrine and Covenants: condemnation and where judgment begins

·  D&C 1:14–16. They have strayed from mine ordinances and walk after the image of the world.

·  D&C 52:14–19. Pattern given that ye be not deceived.

·  D&C 84:54–58. The whole church under condemnation for vanity and unbelief until it remembers and does what is written.

·  D&C 112:24–26. "Vengeance cometh speedily ... and upon my house shall it begin."

·  D&C 121:36–42. Unrighteous dominion condemned.

Objection and reply

Objection: "Continuing revelation explains changes."

Reply: Revelation that cancels earlier revelations and rewrites saving rites does not match the claim that the essentials never change. Plural marriage was revealed and then stopped. Adam–God was taught and then denounced. The priesthood ban was imposed and then removed with prior reasons disavowed. Temple wording and covenants were changed more than once. The record shows drift.

If a church claims revelation and fixed saving ordinances, then reversing earlier revelations or
changing core rites is evidence of apostasy. This paper documents four lines of evidence and applies Bible,
Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants warnings.

"33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

34 Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.

35 For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked."  ALMA 34:33-36
